Administrative Volunteer (Head Injury Therapy Unit (HITU) Frenchay)

Purpose: To staff the reception desk and assist with various administrative tasks

Committment Level: Where -  HITU, Frenchay Hospital site  When - Weekly Thursday 10am – 3pm (flexible)

Description of duties & core tasks: 

  • Answering the door to patients, showing them to waiting room, answering telephone
  • Photocopying
  • Putting letters in envelopes
  • General administrative duties as requested

Skills, experience, attitudes and qualities needed:

  • The ability to communicate with the general public face to face
  • Patience, a calm manner and pleasant approach
  • The ability to use your initiative or ask for an instruction
  • Flexibility
  • Good communication skills
  • Able to work with minimum supervision
  • Compassionate and patient nature

Training provided:

  • Orientation and induction to HITU
  • Ongoing training on receptionist role as indicated

Challenges of the position:

  • Ability to cope with patients with complex physical, communication, cognitive and emotional difficulties
  • Ability to cope with patients displaying some verbal disinhibition and irritability

Boundaries of the position:

  • To maintain confidentiality regarding any information they see or hear
  • To maintain a professional but compassionate attitude at all times
  • Any concerns or distress you may experience as a volunteer within your role should be referred to the Voluntary Services Manager and discussed with clinical team on site

Reimbursement of expenses:

If volunteering for over 4 consecutive hours in one day:

  • Travel expenses to and from the hospital can be reimbursed up to a maximum of a 10 mile each way

Other information: 

  • You will need to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check from NBT
  • You will need to provide 2 independent references (cannot be from a close friend or family member)
